Halloween (a little late)

We had a very calm and mellow Halloween at the Seher House.  Woo Hoo!!  I tell my girls that you get to a certain point in your life where you want to avoid things that are described as exciting, and spontaneous.  Now it is a good weekend when things are described as calm, and mellow, and even the pent-ultimate of BORING!!!  But enough of my ramblings, on to the pictures.

Miss Bobbie as a Pink Fluffy Unicorn Princess, and myself as a Evil Purple Unicorn.

Miss Dahlia as a ZomBEE.

Much candy was collected by the girls.  I even got a dozen farm fresh eggs and some farm fresh tomatoes from a neighbor.  So I would count that as successful Trick-or-Treating!!

Until next time remember:

Hello from night shift

I generally work Monday thru Friday going to school with my patient/client/kiddo.  However on the weekends I do occasionally pick up a shift.  The weekday shifts are almost all school shifts where you go to school with a medically fragile kiddo.  On the weekends the shifts are pretty much always night shifts.

Don't get me wrong, I have worked night shift before.  For years it was my prefer

red shift.  I still enjoy picking up a night shift here and there.  However I am noticing that I am getting  . . . well not to use the O word, you could say I am not as young as I used to be.

I took a nap to help give me an energy boost, but I have hit that wall.  The wall where my brain has told my body What the heck are you doing??  This is prime sleeping time . . . .so go to sleep!!!

I am prepared for the wall.  I brought snacks.  I brought water.  I have been walking around.  I have been doing those little tasks that need to get done, but can be done anytime during the shift.  I have been working on my visit note (we are doing a trial of computer charting).  I sent some emails.  I am updating my blog.  All while my patient happily sleeps away, and their monitors are all quietly shining out their perfectly normal numbers.

I do find that there is a peace to be found in working nights.  Something about dimming the lights and moving at a slower more mello pace brings a different tone to the shift.  Maybe it is because all around me people are regenerating and repairing, and recuperating for their day.  It could be because the whirring sounds, mixed with the soft inhale and exhale, and the slight shushing noises from the machines all combine to create a uniquely relaxing soundscape.  It could be because I am a night owl at heart.

Now if only the transition from day shifts to night shifts, and back again weren't so stinky!!

Until next time (when the sun is up and shining) remember:

Sad days at our house

It has been a sad few days at our house recently.  As you may know I am a home health nurse and I work in the pediatrics department.  I take care of kiddos with major medical needs who may or may not be technology dependent.  This means that they are dependent on a ventilator or oxygen, or some other piece of technology to stay alive.

For the last 6 months I have been working with a young man going to school with him, and spending a lot of time in the summer with him and his family.  We even recently went on a Make-A-Wish trip to Florida and spent 6 days going to Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World.  We returned home from this trip a 10 days ago.

3 days later he passed away.  It was a huge shock to all of us.  Though we knew that he had a shortened life span because of his medical problems, no one had any clue that it would be this short.

He had a lovely funeral.  His family had a huge amount of love and support from their family, friends, and neighbors.  I was so glad that they were able to express the joy that he had brought into their lives, and the hope that they will see him again in the afterlife.  Their religious beliefs and faith added to the joy by knowing that he will be restored to a full functioning body.  The ability to walk, and talk, and to do all of those things that he wasn't able to do on this Earth sustained them thru the tears and the pain of laying his mortal body to rest.

As a nurse we are told over and over to not get attached.  We are to do our job with compassion, but we are not to let our feelings interfere.  I have been a nurse for 20+ years, and I can honestly say that I have never figured out where that line is.  The line between being compassionate and caring, but not being overly attached to the patient.  I can honestly say that this had been one of the hardest experiences of my nursing career.

I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone not to leave things unsaid.  Hug your loved ones.  Make that call and apologize to the person you have been meaning to.  Write a letter that you have been putting off.  Take time today, right this minute to do what it is that you have been figuring you will get around to later on.

Remember until next time:

School Picture Season

Today I was handed a school picture reminder flyer for the kiddo that I go to school with.  It got me thinking about school pictures that I have from my childhood, and my girl's school pictures.

I don't have any pictures to post for them.  I will have to look thru our picture bin and get some scanned into the computer.

I do love school pictures because we give them to our family at Thanksgiving.  It is fun to see the differences in the girls from year to year.  It doesn't seem like they have grown and changed a lot, but when you see last years picture compared to this years picture it really points out the changes.

I have school pictures from when my nieces and nephews were little, and my girls love to see what their older cousins look like when they were similar ages as my girls are now.  I will have to get those pictures out and post some of them to their Facebook pages.

I do love that you can pick from a large variety of backdrop colors and themes, and you can pick a different option for each sheet of pictures.  It can be a little bit overwhelming with all of the choices and then I have to remember what I picked so I the girls don't wear clashing colors on picture day.

Luckily our school doesn't do school photos this early in the year, so I have another month or so before I have to worry about school pictures.  Plus if we don't like the first set we can always wait for retake day in November.  They even offer Spring pictures, but those won't be in the year book, so we never do them.

We need to do family pictures soon.  Our last set of family pictures was 3 years ago.  I am pretty sure that all of us have changed in the last 3 years.  The girls have gotten lots taller.  So maybe we shouldn't get pictures.  I can pretend that the girls aren't getting older (& taller) if there is no evidence on this on the walls, right?!?

We have had some really fun themes for our pictures.  We did a set where we were all in our jammies and holding our favorite stuffed animal.  We did a set in the local park.  We have had some where we were all dressed up fancy-schmancy in matching dresses.  Not sure what we should do this time.  I don't want out pictures to be boring, as I don't feel like we are a boring kind of family.  I better start looking at Pinterest so I can get some ideas.  Or you can leave a comment if you have any ideas for us.

Where in the world did June and July go?!?

Hello Everyone,

I have no idea where June and July went, but it sure went fast!!

June Miss Bobbie spent with her Dad, Step mom and little brother Owen.  They camped a lot, and travelled to Mount Rushmore.  Bobbie said it was really cool.  She was a bit underwhelming in her descriptive words, but the smile on her face made up for it.

July we moved from an apartment to a condo.  We are home owners.  WOO HOO!!  I am adulting all over the place this summer.

August slipped past like a ninja.  Bobbie and I went to Lagoon with Uncle Edward and had a BLAST!!!  We rode a ton of rides, and I had the bejezeez, and daylight, and snot, and any other option you can think of scared out of me.  Bobbie giggled thru all the rides and had her hands in the air like an adrenaline junkie.  Edward was somewhere in the middle (but definitely closer to Bobbie than me).

Today is the 1st day of school for Miss Bobbie, and for my client.  I am still in online school, 1 more class left for this sememster, and then on to my final semester.

I will try to get a post up with some pictures soon.

Journaling with Uncle Edward

We did something different last Sunday. We got together and wrote in our journals. I am pretty causal about my journaling. I have a fill-in-the-blanks journal. So I try to write everyday, but most often it is once every 2-3 days.

Miss Bobbie finished her journal early and looked thru some of Uncle Edwards art books. She saw lots of new-to-me art and had fun learning.

Dedicated to Uncle Edward's Awesomeness

This is a blog dedicated to Uncle Edward and his AWESOMENESS!!!

Yes, we do need to type awesomeness in all capitol letters.  He is that awesome.  I have some photographic evidence that I will present to you in this blog.

Exhibit #1  Uncle Edward rolling down a hill with Bobbie.  While Grandma Jones, and myself were also on the walk with Uncle Edward and Bobbie, only Uncle Edward was so inspired by Bobbie's antics to join her.

Exhibit #2  The contest between Bobbie and Uncle Edward to see who could swing higher.  Really does it get any more awesome than this?  I dare you to say no.

Exhibit #3  Uncle Edward stops to consider the Ants.  He loves to ask Bobbie questions and is willing to answer her questions too.  We have had many interesting discussions while on our walks.

Exhibit #4  Uncle Edward invites us to enjoy lots of different musical and cultural events that we would otherwise miss.  It is always fun, plus there is usually a treat afterwards!!

Exhibit #5  Uncle Edward loves to help with photo opportunities.  While he is not in the picture, he is behind the camera taking a picture for me.  See awesomeness amplified!!

Exhibit #6  Uncle Edward is willing to pose as a model to make my photos more awesome.  His Vanna White pose is EPIC!!  It totally makes my photo much better.

So there you have the photographic evidence of my brother Edward's AWESOMENESS.  So you can see that clearly he is the most epic-ly awesome Uncle in the world.

Stopping to Consider the Ants

We have been getting together with Uncle Edward on Sundays to spend time together. Today we went for a walk. Bobbie and Edward spent some time on our walk to consider the ants in the cracks in the parkway.

Then we went to feed and pet a friends kitties.

An animal filled evening for our family!!

May you have joy in your life!!

Backstory: Chiquita LOVES to lick plastic. The vet says it is normal and for some reason some cats just lick plastic.

So I am totally serious when I say that I hope you have something in your life that brings you as much joy as licking plastic brings to Chikita!!

First Day of School

********I found this in my DRAFTS and it was never published.  I figured it would go ahead and publish it even though it is now about 7 years late.  Oops!!*********

2 pretty girls all excited for school (even though only one is actually going to school this year).

Note the pretty 'Tinkerbell' colored backpack. As well as the snazzy new glasses!!

Dahlia is still loving school. She thinks it great to get more homework each week, and to earn prizes with each mini contest her teacher has.

Yet Another Post Labelled "We are Still Alive!!!"

I looked at the date of my last post and Holy Cow it has been a lot longer than I thought.  I am not doing so well at this whole regularly updating my blog thing.  Oops!!!

So to make up for it, here are some super cute pictures of our kitties.

Saya is taking a nap on my lap.  A favorite place to hang out, nap, and spend as much time as possible getting spoiled!!

Chikita is taking a nap on the couch.  She owns the couch.  She owns the entire living room.  In fact I think she might own the whole apartment.  Just ask her, she will tell you!!!

So until next time (which hopefully won't be 4+ months from now) remember:
